Écorché 1 has been in session for 4 weeks, and students are well into developing their rudimentary skeletal volumes. These are cut from proportionally correct blocks of clay first, and then arranged on a wire armature. This approach differs from how we would begin a figure sculpture (in our Sculpture Basics class for example), but the écorché figure is not simply a sculpture, but is also an anatomical learning and reference piece where structural accuracy is particularly important. We want students to understand why the figure looks the way it does, and so a good start – where the skull, ribcage and pelvis are well proportioned and arranged – is paramount.
Drawing Board Blog
Écorché class in session.
June 10, 2009
"Drawing Board" is a window on the day-to-day activities in the studio. Every few days we'll post work by instructors, class demonstrations, photos of classes in session and anything else that strikes our fancy to document what Vitruvian is all about.
Occasionally, small works will be available for sale via online auction as part of an ongoing fund-raising effort to keep the cost for our classes as low as possible. Works for sale will be accompanied by a direct link to the auction should you wish to place a bid. Thanks in advance, and happy viewing!
