- "Value study for "Cluster""

Value (the degree of lightness or darkness) is often regarded as the most important dimension of color. This is because the sense of light, form and space in an image can all be communicated effectively in monochrome, while errors in the value structure of a painting can seem particularly glaring, no matter how well the artist has observed the corresponding dimensions of hue and chroma.
For this reason it can be a helpful exercise to do a value study in advance of painting, so that come hell or high water, the value structure of the painting will be correct. This small study was done in advance of a still life painting David is working on currently.
