In this class students will learn a procedure for executing a still life painting. The different stages of painting will be discussed and demonstrated in detail, including drawing, transfer, value study, first and second painting, and finishing. Basic ideas about structure, light, value and color will also be discussed, as will composition. Our subjects will be simple and the paintings small to make it easier to achieve a finished piece. The procedure will be thoroughly demonstrated, as the instructor will develop a painting alongside the students.

Instructor David Jamieson explains why it's good to study still life: "One of the reasons I love still life is that it offers a limitless supply of subjects to paint. It’s one of the upsides of living in a consumer society… The sheer amount of stuff out there to paint is truly infinite."
